6 Tips for Choosing the Perfect Wardrobe

Tip #1:

Go for form-fitting items

Lingerie isn’t necessarily meant to be comfortable - it’s meant to show off your figure and accentuate the female form. After all, that is the goal of boudoir photography!

I know it can be tempting for a lot of women to choose lingerie that hides their stomach (such as babydolls) - but I do not recommend them! Even if you feel self-conscious about your midsection or you’re a curvier girl, I promise that a bodysuit or high-waisted undies are going to create a far more flattering look and give more shape to your body as they hug your curves. Lingerie that is too loose can wind up bending and folding in awkward ways that you won’t want in your photos. So, don’t be afraid to bring that skimpy bodysuit that you’ve been eyeing up - this is a safe space where you can rock your curves!

Tip #2:

Choose Neutral Colors

My rule of thumb is - only choose colors that you would find in nature. Black, white, beige, cream, blush pink, mossy green are great choices and pair beautifully with my studio decor. These colors are also more timeless, therefore you won’t tire of them a few years down the road. Bright colors can come across a bit harsh or stark in photos and often detract from the main subject - which is your face and body!

Tip #3:

Don't be afraid to go Bare

I’ll start by saying that there is absolutely never any pressure or obligation to be fully nude during your session. That being said, if you feel drawn to the implied nude look but think that you just don’t have the guts to bare it all - this is your permission to go for it… YOLO! It’s just you and me during your session, and you can rest assured that there’s nothing I haven’t seen many times before. In fact, implied nudes and “the white sheet” always end up being the most stunning works of art (think renaissance greek goddess) and become favorites of mine and my clients. Your photos will always remain private unless you sign a permission slip to share them.

Tip #4:

Flattering cuts & lines

When it comes to lingerie, the more dramatic cuts are often the most flattering. For example, deep v-neck bodysuits create a gorgeous, daring look. Bodysuits with high-cut thighs accentuate your hips & make your legs look longer. If your favorite undies sit at your hips, we can create the “high-cut” effect by pulling the sides up over your hips. High-waisted undies are another great option because they cinch the waist and create more of an hourglass shape. Anything strappy or lace is super sexy. Cheeky undies with lace or scalloped trim give a gorgeous shape to your booty. The right cut can make a world of difference in shaping your figure.

Tip #5:

The cozy, girl next-door

An oversized sweater or a simple white t-shirt with leg warmers/thigh-highs is always a fun option for a more down to earth look. This look leaves a bit more to the imagination which is super sexy. If you decide to bring a relaxed look, it’s a nice way to start our shoot as it allows you to get comfortable in front of the camera while still being mostly covered.

Tip #6:

Pull from what you already own

Your favorite pair of jeans, a black or white blazer, your favorite graphic t-shirt, a faux fur or leather jacket are all killer wardrobe ideas for your boudoir session. When you include items that you already know, wear and love - it’s so easy to create images where your personality shines through. After all, that’s what boudoir is all about - capturing the authentic YOU as the best version of yourself.

What the heck is implied nude? It basically means you can be fully nude but keeping private bits covered with your hands, strategic posing or a sheet. Or in some cases, you can even be wearing a super thin, nude-colored thong and it can be removed in photoshop.

The most important factor in putting together the perfect wardrobe for your session, is to only bring items that you absolutely love and feel amazing in. If a piece of lingerie looks gorgeous on the hanger but you only feel so-so when you wear it, leave it at home. If you don’t feel 100% wearing something - there’s a good chance you won’t love the photos. Bring what you love, and keep your unique personality in mind when putting pieces together. Remember, I’m always here to help - so feel free to shoot me an email if you have specific ideas in mind or you’re on the fence about a certain look.
